SYDNEY, June 25 (World Daily Times) — Leah Stewart is awake and speaking with family after spending 10 days in an induced coma following a shark attack at Coogee Beach in Sydney, Australia, her brother said in an update shared this week.

Joshua Stewart said doctors reduced Leah Stewart’s sedation and extubated her, allowing a brief period in which she woke in the intensive care unit and told her mother and partner Fernando, “I love you.”

According to updates shared by Joshua Stewart and reported by ABC News and Fox News, Leah Stewart had been in critical condition for 12 days and underwent multiple surgeries, including surgery to remove her arm and treat other serious injuries.

Joshua Stewart said Thursday that Leah Stewart was no longer in critical condition and could communicate with family members and medical staff.

ABC News reported that Stewart was also reunited with her young daughter, August, for the first time since the attack. Joshua Stewart said it was the first night Leah and August had ever spent apart.

The attack happened June 13 at Coogee Beach, and the family’s updates did not identify the hospital treating her.
