BAHRAIN, June 27 (World Daily Times) — Bahrain said Iranian drones entered its territory on Saturday, and the kingdom’s Foreign Ministry called the strike a flagrant threat to national security as Gulf governments lined up to condemn the attack.
The Gulf Cooperation Council’s secretary-general, Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, called the attack treacherous and said it could undermine peace efforts. Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry said the strikes were a dangerous undermining of peace and stability efforts and a threat to regional security.
Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates also denounced the attack in statements cited by their foreign ministries or governments. Saudi Arabia and Qatar said the incident violated Bahrain’s sovereignty and international law, while the UAE said it remained committed to supporting Bahrain’s safety and stability.
Bahrain’s Foreign Ministry also linked the attack to commitments under an “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding” signed June 17, according to statements reported from the ministry. The New York Times separately reported that Gulf foreign ministers meeting in Bahrain condemned Iranian assaults on Bahrain and Kuwait and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said on state-run television that it had targeted several locations “of the U.S. terrorist army in the region,” according to Fox News’ account citing The Associated Press. The extent of damage from the drones was not detailed in the official statements reviewed.
