SAN FRANCISCO, July 15 (San Francisco News Online) — San Francisco fire crews were searching Tuesday night for one person still missing after a pontoon boat capsized near Alcatraz Island, where 17 people were pulled from the water and one needed CPR, officials said.
San Francisco Fire Lt. Mariano Elias said the emergency call came in just after 3:30 p.m. about a pontoon pleasure boat about 600 yards from Alcatraz. Chief Dean Crispen said crews later found a three-deck vessel carrying 19 people.
Crispen said the boat was first reported as on fire, but officials did not find evidence of a fire. He said one person who was pulled from the water later died, and one dog on the boat also died.
The response included divers, helicopters and 11 vessels, Crispen said, with help from the U.S. Coast Guard and Oakland police. Mayor Daniel Lurie said, “We are in an active search,” and called it “an all-hands-on-deck search and, hopefully, rescue.”
Officials said rescued people were taken to Gashouse Cove Marina as the search continued near the waterfront.
